NEW DELHI: In an incredible FA Cup quarterfinal match at Molineux Stadium on Saturday, Coventry City pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2, securing their place in the semi-finals for just the second time in the club’s history.
Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno had given Wolves the lead in the 88th minute, overturning Ellis Simms’ first-half goal, and it had looked as though Wolves would win.Coventry City, though, would not give up. Simms scored his second goal in the seventh minute of extra time, setting up a dramatic turn of events. In the tenth minute of injury time, teammate Haji Wright completed the victory with a curling shot into the corner.
Simms’s brace not only helped Coventry City win, but it also made him the first player in the team’s 140-year history to score five goals in a single FA Cup campaign since Keith Houchen in 1986–87. That year, Coventry also took home the coveted trophy.
“A wonderful occasion—the fans have been incredible, and we’re overjoyed. I’m very happy for the boys. We’ve stuck with it, and even down 2-1, we didn’t give up,” Simms stated in an ITV interview.
“It’s going to be a great occasion at Wembley,” Simms said, expressing the team’s resolve to carry on their incredible journey as they looked ahead to the semi-finals. We wish to persevere through. We will give it our all and enter the next round with all guns blazing, even though it will be difficult against a top Premier League team.”
