Stephon Gilmore is ‘open’ to joining the Patriots in NFL free agency, but the Dallas Cowboys want to sign him.
FRISCO – Regarding a Dallas Cowboys reunion, Stephon Gilmore has spoken candidly and in the perfect ways. However, it appears that he is also making some quiet remarks regarding a reunion of the New England Patriots.
During the Super Bowl, Gilmore expressed his desire to return to the Cowboys, where he played well during the 2023 season before becoming a free agent. “We are unable to speak until March. However, that is the objective since I believe we have what it takes to get where we want to go, and I want to be a part of that.
March, to start with. As a result, everyone is conversing. Furthermore, even the most pessimistic Cowboys supporter would have to question whether Dallas, which hasn’t done much to bolster its roster in free agency, is still seen as “having the pieces to get where we want to go.”
33-year-old Gilmore was a member of the Patriots squad that won a Super Bowl title in Super Bowl LIII and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 while playing in New England. The Cowboys’ approach thus far to a player of his caliber most definitely does not suggest a big-money or multi-year offer, even with everything he brought to the table in his one season here. Taking everything into account, it is therefore not shocking that rumors in Boston suggest that Gilmore would be “open” to rejoining the Patriots; however, New England is far behind Dallas in terms of competing in 2024. (Dallas is currently the NFL’s No. 10 team, a “high” ranking according to NFL.com.)
Christian Gonzalez, a second-year cornerback, is talking about Gilmore as a mentor in New England. Some of the same reasoning holds true in Dallas, where Gilmore, the leader of the locker room, has undoubtedly taught starting corners Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland a lot.
However, he has earned the right to base his decision on “contention vs. contract” at this stage of his career. Put another way, if he wants to chase the money, do so. or follow a ring. or better yet, both.
The fact that Gilmore is recovering from shoulder surgery and may be sidelined until training camp could be the reason why the big offers haven’t started rolling in. But he’s a good player and a good teammate … and right now, both Dallas and New England could use a lot of both of those things.
